What Is Four Roses Bourbon?
Four Roses is a renowned brand of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey and has been in production for over 130 years. It’s the only bourbon distillery that combines five proprietary yeast strains with two different mash bills to create a variety of distinct and exceptional bourbons.
The brand currently holds the reputation as one of the most notable names in the bourbon world. Their passion for quality is apparent when one has the opportunity to taste this award-winning bourbon whiskey. It boasts a silky and mellow taste that has become a trademark of the Four Roses line.
The History of Four Roses Bourbon
There are many different stories told about the true origin of the Four Roses name. Some believe that the brand was created by Rufus Mathewson Rose. However, owner Kirin Brewery refers to Paul Jones Jr. as the true founder and states that he trademarked the name in 1888.
Four Roses enjoys telling a sweet love story in which Paul Jones Jr. fell in love with a Southern belle and proposed to her, after which she said “Yes” and arrived at the upcoming grand ball wearing a stunning gown and a corsage of four red roses. It’s believed that Paul named his bourbon after the love he had for his belle.
The world may never know what truly occurred, but the question certainly adds a level of intrigue. What we do know, however, is that the distillery, located in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, was originally owned by J.T.S. Brown and was named Old Prentice distillery at the time. It was constructed in 1910 using beautiful Spanish Mission-style architecture, and designed by Joseph & Joseph Architects, a company that has over 100 years of experience in distillery design.
In 1943, the company was purchased by The Seagram Company and, despite the fact that Four Roses was the top selling Bourbon in the U.S. from the 30s through the 50s, Seagram discontinued the sale of straight bourbon to focus on blended whiskey sales. They did, however, strictly focus on selling straight bourbon to Europe and Asia as these markets were quickly scaling at the time. It quickly became, and still is, a top-selling bourbon in both Europe and Japan today.
Four Roses Straight Bourbon didn’t become available in the United States until 1994, nearly 40 years later! This was marked by the fact that the Four Roses brand ownership was passed from Seagram to several owners before it was finally settled with The Kirin Brewery in 2002. Kirin discontinued blended whiskey and focused on straight bourbon whiskey as the demand in America was growing.
This catalyzed the rapid growth of the Four Roses brand. In 2019, the distillery pursued a $55M expansion project while simultaneously adding a permanent and new batch of bourbon to their roster. The project ultimately allowed the distillery to double their production capacity.
How Is Four Roses Bourbon Made?
The reason the Four Roses is so unique is because it’s the only distillery that uses five unique yeast strains and two separate mash bills to create various bourbon recipes. Each one is highly unique, boasting quality and character that is difficult to match.
Our process is intricate and carefully conducted so that the best Bourbon is crafted every time. Four Roses chooses only the highest quality, non-GMO grains. In fact, they have been ordering their corn from the same farm for over 50 years, and they inspect each delivery ensuring that every single batch looks perfect.
In comparison to other bourbon brands, Four Roses uses a larger quantity of rye which gives it the spicy flavor and silky feel that it’s so well-known for. Two distinct mash bills are used in production - one is 60% corn and contains 35% rye, while the other is 75% corn with 20% rye.
Additionally, Four Roses has crafted five proprietary yeast strains, lending to an even greater variety of extraordinary bourbon flavors. The five strains include “V” for delicate fruit, “K” for slight spice, “O” for rich fruit, “Q'' for floral essence, and “F” for herbal notes.
Once all of the components are combined at perfect ratios, limestone-rich water is poured into the mash bill which is then cooked at a very controlled temperature for ultimate perfection and to preserve the natural flavors of the grains. The mixture is then distilled, bottled and shipped out to bourbon connoisseurs through the globe.
Because these bourbons are distilled with a plethora of different components, the producer includes a four-letter code that informs the customer about where the bottle was produced, the mash bill used, the yeast strain, the type of spirit.
The 1st and 3rd letters are always “O” for Four Roses, and “S” for straight whiskey. The second letter demonstrates which of the two mash bills is used (E for 20% rye and B for 35% rye), and the last letter shows the yeast strain chosen.
